No Matter What Man Thinks or Does . . . God Rules and Over-rules!

All of you should honor marriage. You should keep the marriage bed pure. God will judge the person who commits adultery. He will judge everyone who commits sexual sins.(Hebrews 13:4)
The marriage bed . . . what a beautiful place for a husband and wife! It is pure, holy, good and fun . . . for the husband and wife! Anything else is just wrong. God gave sex to the husband and wife to enjoy and to be fruitful and multiply(Genesis 1:28)making little ones who are also in the image and likeness of God. Sex is indeed pleasurable, but in marriage. There is no shame or guilt when a husband and wife make love. But when it is fornication (singles) or adultery (married folks with others)boy is there shame, guilt, and consequences! One may not feel the shame or suffer the consequences at the moment, but it will catch up with a person mentally, physically, and spiritually! I am not speaking from a holier than though perspective, but from experience. Before becoming a CHRISTian, I uffered through a divorce and then indulged in a relationship outside of marriage. I still suffer the consequences! But God has saved me and wiped clean my slate and I now enjoy the benefits and joys (guilt-free) of a Godly marriage. Grace, mercy, and new life abound! Consequences of my past . . . yes. Forgiveness and new life in Christ . . . YES INDEED! Sex, no matter what kind or with whom is wrong if it is not enjoyed within the parameters of God's Word (husband-man and wife-woman). There are no exceptions! God's Word has not and will not change or adjust to the times or culture. We must subject our lifestyle to His Word! As we approach a New Year and in many cases new government laws and mandates, I challenge every believer to STAND for Christ and against unGodly practices in CHRISTian love, with the intent to win souls for the Savior.
But Adam didn’t find a helper that was right for him. So the Lord God caused him to fall into a deep sleep. While the man was sleeping, the Lord God took out one of his ribs. He closed up the opening that was in his side. Then the Lord God made a woman. He made her from the rib he had taken out of the man. And he brought her to him. The man said,“Her bones have come from my bones. Her body has come from my body. She will be named ‘woman,’because she was taken out of a man.” That’s why a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife. The two of them will become one. The man and his wife were both naked. They didn’t feel any shame.(Genesis 2:20-25)

Applause . . . Applause!

A huge cloud of witnesses is all around us. So let us throw off everything that stands in our way. Let us throw off any sin that holds on to us so tightly. Let us keep on running the race marked out for us.(Hebrews 12:1
) Everyone needs a little encouragement. Everyone needs to hear a "Way to go" now and then. We need to know that what we are attempting to accomplish can in fact be successfully carried out. The writer of hebrews reminds us in the passage above that we have plenty of examples all around us . . . in the Bible and in our own lives. What holds us back is sin. Satan lies to us saying we can never do it. We doubt ourselves. We doubt God. So what story will we believe and carry out? Will it be God's story of success (Jeremiah 29:11)or Satan's story of deception and lies? We must decide to stay in the lane God has placed us in. We must focus on His will and the finish line, rather than the daily struggles and adversities. We have the proof all around us. God is able! Will we trust Him at His word?
I am sure that the One who began a good work in you will carry it on until it is completed. That will be on the day Christ Jesus returns.(Philippians 1:6)

Upreach and Outreach

Let us hold firmly to the hope we claim to have. The One who promised is faithful. Let us consider how we can stir up one another to love. Let us help one another to do good works. Let us not give up meeting together. Some are in the habit of doing this. Instead, let us cheer each other up with words of hope. Let us do it all the more as you see the day coming when Christ will return. (Hebrews 10:23-25)
The vertical beam of the cross points directly upward as a reminder of the work done directly by God on our behalf: . . . sin debt paid . . . relationship restored . . . man's hope alive! However, there is another beam reaching east to west. This beak reminds us of the human touch of Jesus . . . how far and wide he reached out to save every human being if we simply accept His plan on His terms. These very vertical beams require those of us who claim His name to reach out to touch those around us as well. Jesus' pain upon the cross should be a reminder that we need to show others how much we appreciate the sacrifice made for us. It is the only way we can express the love of Christ. The upward reach of the cross to God's heart leads to the outward reach from our hearts to others. We stir up others . . . partner with one another in ministry . . .meet to encourage one another . . .cheer one another up! It's how we reach one another and the dying world . . . with the hands, feet and heart of Christ!

What a promise . . .Still Standing!

The high priest enters the Most Holy Room every year. He enters with blood that is not his own. But Christ did not enter heaven to offer himself again and again. If he had, he would have had to suffer many times since the world was created. But now he has appeared once and for all time. He has come at the end of the ages to do away with sin. He has done that by offering himself. People have to die once. After that, God will judge them. In the same way, Christ was offered up once. He took away the sins of many people. He will also come a second time. At that time he will not suffer for sin. Instead, he will come to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.(Hebrews 9:25-28)
It's December 21, 2012 and most of us are still here on earth! Oh yes, some have passed to on into eternity. Yet for those who were afraid of the most recent (and still absurd) predictions of the end of the world as we know it and even those of us who place our trust in the Creator of this world, we are still here! People have been offering up various views of the world since time began. Others have attempt at explaining God and some even claim to be God. All throughout time some have even made feeble attempst to predict God or even claim that there is no God. I choose to believe Him at His Word! God is our Creator and He is still attempting to reach every one of us still standing with His promises of grace, mercy and ultimately forgiveness and eternal life. However, it comes only through one person . . . JESUS CHRIST! When He does come back, and He will, it will be on His timing! We must be ready and the decision must be made while we are yet here living.
What a promise from God . . . to save all mankind if we will just respond according to His instructions . . . the promise is still standing! How will you respond?

Do not settle for less . . .

Land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is farmed receives the blessing of God. But land that produces thorns and thistles is worthless and is in danger of being cursed. In the end it will be burned. Even though we speak like this, dear friends, we are convinced of better things in your case—the things that have to do with salvation. God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them. We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, so that what you hope for may be fully realized. We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised. (Hebrews 6:7-12)
Many times we look around us and see evil winning out. We experience hardships in our lives . . . thinking we are doing what God desires for us to do, yet we see those who do ot even acknowledge God prospering day after day. It is hard to swallow at times . . . Yet if we truly trust God's Word, we do know that better things are yet to come. We must have spiritual vision. We have to see things through our Savior's eyes or else it will become too much to handle! This is when the Holy Spirit takes over and we begin to trust. We experience walking by faith and not by sight! Are we seeking after our Father's well done? Are we anticipating His will and even His return? Like watching fruit develop on a vine . . . this life of following Jesus is a developing process. We seldom receive immediate results.
We reap what we sow. (Galationa 6:7) Let's dig in deep and trust the Lord to follow through! Do not settle for less!

We Play to Win the Game . . . .

By this time you should be teachers. But in fact, you need someone to teach you all over again. You need even the simple truths of God’s word. You need milk, not solid food. Anyone who lives on milk is still a baby. That person does not want to learn about living a godly life. Solid food is for those who are grown up. They have trained themselves with a lot of practice. They can tell the difference between good and evil.(Hebrews 5:12-14)
I know all my former athlete friends remember growing up when mom or dad would measure our height by the closet door? We would try to stand on our tip toes to get an extra 1/4 inch. We would try to predict how tall we would be? Then later on in high school and college, as we would hit the weight roomand gym, we would often measure our biceps and chest just to see how much muscle we had put on that day! Everything was measured . . . our height, weight, distance, speed, vertical jump . . . Our goal was always to get faster, better, bigger, stronger . . . So why have things changed now that we are now mature and settled as Christians? Do we not continue to engage as if to win the battle just as we did in school? Why have we become complacent? Where is our sense of competition? Yes the overall victory is won. Jesus defeated sin on the cross. However, there are still souls out on the field to be won! We cannot just sit on the bench and allow others to lose the battle. We compete until the final whistle blows! We need to be leaders in the war!
Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.(1 Corinthians 9:24-27)
God did not save us for us to lose our competitive edge. In fact, He wants us to increase our fervor. CRISTiands should be the most intense athletes, especially in the spiritual playing field. To quote a rather popular former NFL coach:

Why do we study . . . why not?

The word of God is living and active. It is sharper than any sword that has two edges. It cuts deep enough to separate soul from spirit. It can separate joints from bones. It judges the thoughts and purposes of the heart.(Hebrews 4:12)
The Word of God is alive and well and will do us well to know it way before tragedies and disasters occur. We must be ready with an answer when the world as "Why?". By being properly prepared, understanding the character of God, we can properly comfort and console those who are distraught, even ourselves! We may not be able to expalin the whys and hows, but we will be able to be the heart, hands, and feet of Christ. Even Jesus could not explain away the death of Lazarus, but He felt the pain and healed the hurt. yes, He did raise him from the dead, but just being able to grieve with a person can be enough for us and those we know are hurting. God's will is hard to explain at times, especially as the world gets worse. Sin can tear at the heart of the very best Christian soul. Yet we need to be available and ready to act in accordance with God's heart to be sure others can feel His grace and mercy. So how do we prepare ourselves . . . why do we study His Word daily . . why not? We have to be ready, because we never know when God will use us!
Do your best to please God. Be a worker who doesn’t need to be ashamed. Teach the message of truth correctly.(2 Timothy 2:15)

What to say?

See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness. (Hebrews 3:12-13)
With so much sin around us, many fall away and give up on God. "Where is God now?" many will ask. "Why does God allow such evil to occur?" God is still God but because of our sin, man chooses evil over good. However, we must not concentrate on the evil, but rather on the plans God has for those who choose to live for Him.(Psalm 37) Like Queen Esther, we too are in this world in this time to do God's bidding and accomplish His purposes. Rather than be shocked at all the violence, we need to be grounded in His Word and prepared to respond. We cannot afford to shrink back.
For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall there enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father's house shall be destroyed: and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this? (Esther 4:14)
In terrible times, it is not so important what to say but what to do. What would God have us to do? How does a believer react to dire circumstances when it seems to others that our God has disappeared? We must be Jesus in the flesh as we comfort, counsel, feed, and clothe the hurting. We must respond with a heart of Jesus.
What to say? . . . no . . . rather . . . What to DO?

. . . between Sundays

I always thank my God as I remember you in my prayers, because I hear about your love for all his holy people and your faith in the Lord Jesus. I pray that your partnership with us in the faith may be effective in deepening your understanding of every good thing we share for the sake of Christ. Your love has given me great joy and encouragement, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the Lord’s people.(Philemon 4-7)
It is always good to have a core group around when serving the Lord. The few who support you in think and thin and encourage you when things are challenging. Believe me, things do get challenging . . . Paul here is asking Philemon to live out his faith by forgiving a run away slave, Onesimus, and accepting him just as would accept Paul. here is a fine example of living out the grace and mercy which Christ gave unto Philemon! Active faith shows in real life situations that occur between Sundays. Active faith not only serves others in need, but also encourages fellow believers.
It's not the Sunday worship that proves our faith and witnesses to the unsaved . . . it is what goes on between Sundays . . . outside of the walls of church!

The Perfect Gift

But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. 8 This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good. These things are excellent and profitable for everyone. (3 Titus 4-7)
Grace and mercy . . . we hear it often but do we understand it? We eeceive what we do not deserve (forgiveness and eternal life)and are not being punished (death and separation from God)for what we have done (sin). What a gift! What a Savior! Yet do we share it in return? After receiving such a gift, we are to reciprocate such gifts to others, so that they too may experience the love of God! God's love is to share and in this world, we need to share it before we preach it for people to really experience it!
This is the time we are out shopping for the perfect gift . . . we already have it. Just share His love and watch the results!

His Way or the Highway

For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good. These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. (Titus 2:11-15)
Many times we are presented with the opportunity to stand for our faith, yet we will crumble under political corecctness, friendships, family loyalties, or job security. Imagine being able to love the Lord so much that nothing matters more than to honor Him! I can recall a few athletes and politicians who have stood their ground and lost positions of prestige because they refused to waver. The Bible warns us against going with the crowd. Do we have to be reminded that not everyone who says they know Jesus and claim to be believers are what they say they are? Beware my friends of the traps of legalism, warped doctrines, and social religion. Our faith is not to be seen as an opportunity to climb up the social ladder or increase our network of friends and business associates. It is rather an alternative lifestyle of denial, sacrifice, and a conscientious and daily decision to live to honor our soon coming Savior.
Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. (Matthew 7:13-14)
We are all facing an audience with the Almighty God one day. Once we face Him, He will render a decision . . . Welcome home or away with you. (Matthew 7:23)Where will you and I stand?
His Way or the Highway? The decision must be made while we are living!

God has the answers

For there are many rebellious people, full of meaningless talk and deception, especially those of the circumcision group. They must be silenced, because they are disrupting whole households by teaching things they ought not to teach—and that for the sake of dishonest gain. (Titus 1:10-11)
Wow . . . this could very well have been written today! As we celebrated CHRISTmas with the teens we serve (and their families) I was moved when I read this during my studies this morning. Working one on one with these kids, my wife and I realize the challenges they indeed face. We can see the hearts of the kids. They really want to do right. They want to be successful. They even want to honor God! But they face so many obstacles in their schools, in their communities, and a times even within their homes. Many times it is our task simply to listen and allow them to share their struggles. We do not have all the answers, but God does! His Word sounds forth loud and clear today. The wisdom of God calls out among the streets and in the classrooms. It is our calling to share His Word with the kids in deeds and actions and if we need to . . . with words! Teens today need to see and experience God's love even before they hear it. It is not unlike the days when Jesus walked the earth . . . Meet the needs, then share the Words. God has the answers!
My children, listen to me. Blessed are those who keep my ways. Listen to my teaching and be wise. Don’t turn away from it. Blessed is the one who listens to me. He watches every day at my doors. He waits beside my doorway. Those who find me find life. They receive favor from the Lord. But those who don’t find me harm only themselves. Everyone who hates me loves death.” (Proverbs 8:32-36)

The Finish Line

For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time for my departure is near. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day . . . and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.(2 Timothy 4: 6-8)
Life can and will be very challenging. Beleievers were NEVER promised riches, glory, great health, good times, and the like . . . in THIS world! The rewards await us after we live this portion of life.
We must keep our hearts and lives focused on the finish line!
Paul was in constant challenge, mentally and pysically. His old freinds resented him and hunted him down. His new friends feared him and mistrusted him. He lived for Christ alone and for His time with Him in heaven. Nothing on earth was more rewarding for Paul then to be at the feet of the Savior on that day!
What are we living for today? Where is our heart's focus? Are we anticipating the finish line or living for the thrill of the race?

It's ALL good (and TRUE!)

But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:14-17)
When it comes to God's Word, it's ALL good and it is ALL true!Some may be a history lesson, some may be a song, others may be parables, but every word is from the Holy Spirit of God and it is all true and good for our good. There is no lie in the Bible. There is no untruth. Man may have caused some minute translational errors along the centuries (simple words or letters left out here or there) but God's Word is God's Word! If we do not believe it all, then we are lying to ourselves and disrespecting God. Many today choose to believe some of the Bible but not all of it. They pass it off as fairy tale or out of date. Not so! God's Word is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow . . . for all eternity.(Hebrews 13:8)There is no changing with God.(James 1:17)Jesus is the Word and His words remain as well. Everything else may pass away, but His Word shall always be! (Matthew 14:35) God's Word is a direct communication from our Creator to us. What a wonderful and comforting thought! It makes no sense to reject it! Only a fool would suggest such a thing!
It's all good and it's all true. Love it . . . embrace it . . . cherish it . . . believe it . . . live it out!

Sharing the struggles, sharing the victories!

Join with me in suffering, like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in civilian affairs, but rather tries to please his commanding officer. Similarly, anyone who competes as an athlete does not receive the victor’s crown except by competing according to the rules. The hardworking farmer should be the first to receive a share of the crops. (2 Timothy 3-6)
Sharing the struggles, sharing the victories! . . . One beautiful thing about sports is that the harder one works, the better one feels after the competition. Hard work produces good results. One must put in the time at practice, in the weight rooms, studying playbooks, in-season and off-season. An athlete never stops working to get better . . . to defeat the opponent! The individual gains and the team gains as everyone works at their particular job. it's the same with the believer and his team . . . the Body of Christ. We must all put the time in to improve as a player for the team. We must study, exercise (spiritually and physically), and actively partcipate in the competition (ministry) in order for the team to function properly. Just one player on the disabled lists hurts the team! As believers we work to please the Coach . . . Jesus Christ. We do not seek the appluase of the crowd. At any time they can turn against us with just one miscue. His ways bring success. We must keep to the scripted game plan. Only the final score matters . . . We win . . . Satan loses!

Power is a good thing to possess

For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God.(2 Timothy 1:7-8)
Power is a good thing to possess . . . if used corretly! Power under control (meekness) is one of the things the Holy Spirit gives to every believer if we choose to use it. Not power to abuse, enslave or belittle, but power to love others, to forgive others, to offer others a second chance, to share with others the power of Jesus Christ! To walk in the power of the Risen Savior is to walk in confidence despite struggles, despite suffering, and despite setbacks. It is the power of knowing that God has it all figured out!

God has no favorites!

Do not rebuke an older man harshly, but exhort him as if he were your father. Treat younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity. (1 Timothy 5:1-2)
I have now been saved for more than twenty years (August 1992). For me, that is a milestone! However, what is even more amazing is that God has allowed my wife and I to serve Him in full time ministry now for the fifteen years of our marriage. Since we pledged our love for one another and for the Lord, He has been faithful to us and our family! Though we have stumbled and fallen along the way, God's grace and mercy has never been more evident than His work in my life! God has blessed us with so many faithful pastors, ministers, teachers, counselors, mentors and Godly friends that we have been able to gleen so much from them and apply it to our own lives. It has also taught us how to serve others, whether they are adults, teens, toddlers or even strangers we have met on the streets and in the business field. God has given me the gifts of evangelism and teaching, but also he has given me the abilities to be able to interact with folks across the spectrum of age, culture, and other various backgrounds. Though I love our ministry to teens, I also cherish my conversations with senior citizens, the four and five year olds, also my peers in ministry. As we all serve where God has guided and equipped us, let us remember to treat everyone with the respect they deserve. Whether folks are young, elderly, or a bit different than we are, everyone deserves our respect and everyone has something to offer. If God could respect me enough to wait for me to come to my senses, I can surely be patient, kind, and respectful to all He brings my way! Who am I to know if the next person I see may come to know the Lord because they encountered my presence?
Just as Peter, wrote, I too have learned that God has no favorites! (Acts 10:34)

Back to Basics

For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.(1 Timothy 4:8)
Everyone wants to be in shape these days . . . well at least most people! No one I know really wants to be overweight. Most folks I know want to lose 10-20 pounds, stat walking, or maintain some form of physical fitness. However, not everyone is desiring to get closer to God. Not all my friends, family members, or associates are seeking a healthier relationship with the Creator of our lives. It's a bit confusing to me. The one who made us knows all about us . . . even our physical health! It makes sense that if we get closer to the Maker, we can be in better touch with the thing that was made . . . After all we are made in His image!
It seems to me that if we get back to basics, we might just be a bit better off all around!Ummmmm . . . Just me thinkin' out loud . . .

Never fair . . . but worth the effort!

Timothy, my son, I am giving you this command in keeping with the prophecies once made about you, so that by recalling them you may fight the battle well, holding on to faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and so have suffered shipwreck with regard to the faith. (1 Timothy 1:18-19)
Never fair . . . but worth the effort! Many are giving up their committment to the Lord; falling away from church attendance, Bible study, church events, and even family loyalties. Sad, but a true sign of the times. Many give up when faced with various challenges.
But Jesus did not give up!
Before we consider throwing in the towel and giving in to the pressures and temptations of this world, remember these words: Jesus endured the cross for you and me.
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.(Hebrews 12:1-3)

It Takes a Village . . .

We always thank God for all of you and continually mention you in our prayers. We remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.(2 Thesalonnians 1:2-3)
As I often look back to where God began His work in my family, me personally, and our ministry, I realize very quickly that it has really nothing to do with me! It is all God and those he placed in my life. So many sacrificed for me, were patient with me, overlooked my stupidity and stubborness, and yes, even supported and encouraged me! Don't know why, but they did! I am so grateful to God, my parents, my wife and children, my pastor, so many other pastors, ministers, and teachers within the Church Body, and all of the many who support our outreach to kids and families (The Sparrows' Nest Ministries, Inc).
It indeed is taking a village to raise this child!
God has been so awesome in His orcheastration of my life. I am dumbfounded as I look back as to why, how, and even when he did it all. I am so grateful. The Good News is that He is not through with me yet! (Philippians 1:6)

Be Aware . . .Misfit!

Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, “Peace and safety,” destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober . . . (1 Thessalonians 5:1-6)
In these crazy days, be aware! We must be aware of dangers all around us. Folks are looking to take advantage of people in all situations; at the malls, at gas stations, through the internet . . .
More importantly, we must be aware that Christ is closer to coming back now than ever before!
Brothers ansd sisters in Christ . . . fellow believers . . . we need to live like we know this! We must be a peculiar people . . . set apart from the rest. We must stand out so others who are lost in the crowd can see the other option!
This is not the time to blend in family. It is time to be the unusual, the misfit. Why, because we are! We are not of this world!

Our Disciples?

For we know, brothers and sisters loved by God, that he has chosen you, because our gospel came to you not simply with words but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake. You became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you welcomed the message in the midst of severe suffering with the joy given by the Holy Spirit. (1 Thessaloninans 1:5-6)
We are often asked what we actually do within our ministry. I frequently wonder myself and in my time of conversation with the Lord just what motivates me! As one who has been gifted in evangelism and teaching, I have come to the conclusion that I really get excited not just when folks (especially kids) accept Christ as Lord and savior, but when they live it! Many times I have run into a young lady or man that comes up and reminds me that I led them to Christ years ago or prayed with them at a time when they were struggling. Now to see them walking closely with the Lord brings me a sense of satisfaction sure,but more importantly it reminds me of my first priorty . . . keep sharing Christ with everyone! We never really know who acccepts Christ and who does not . . . that lies with God. Of the many times I have heard someone say they are saved, there are even fewer times that I actually see someone living for Christ! To really believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior is a lifestyle, making decisions minute-by-minute to follow the Lord.
I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.(Galatians 2:20)
Recently I have been so encouraged to have a few of the kids we have worked with either come up to us in church, call us, send an e-mail, or even contact us on Facebook and let us know how they are doing. While they are not perfect, they have let us know that the things we have shared with them are now making sense. They realize what it really means to be a Christian and are trying to allow God complete control of their lives. Our Christian walk is a process. Listen to Paul:
Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.(Philippians 2:12-13)
So while my first priority is sharing the Word and leading everyone I may come in contact with to Christ, coming in at 1b is follow-up. Let's not be afraid to ask someone how their walk is comng along. What are their struggles? How can we help them? More importantly, how can help each other stay closer to Christ? Let's not forget discipleship! After all, Jesus walked with His closest friends for three years before letting them on their own.
How long are we willing to walk alongside one of our disciples?

Just the Right Amount of Seasoning . . .

Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone. (Colossians 4:5-6)
Just about this time of year, as the Holidays are approaching, we are looking forward to grandma's pies, Aunt Mary's cookies, or perhaps even a surprise dish or two. However we look at it, the best dish always seems to have just the right amount of seasoning to hit the spot our bellies (and our hearts)have been longing to taste. It is the same way with how we respond to others. As folks begin to hold conversations concerning movies, music, or other entertaining topics around the dinner table or ballgames, let's be wise as to how we resond! We have the opportunity to share our beliefs even as we engage in casual conversation. Rather than agree with the crazy things going on in our world, we can insert a comment or two such as "You know I do not enjoy these kind of movies now", or "I wonder what his wife thought about that comment he made during the interview?" Many casual conversations give us an opportunity to speak about my experiences rather than dumping the entire salt shaker on someone else!
Just a pinch of salt might do!
Let's pray about how God can use us throughout the coming days whether it be at home, in the neighborhood, even out about in the malls and other stores as we rush about our days.
As we face challenging times, let's make the most of the opportunities we still have left.(Ephesians 5:16)

Prayer, prayer, and more prayer !

Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.(Colossians 4:2)
Prayer, prayer, and more prayer . . .It has to dominate the ife of a true believer. Paul would aso remind us to pray always in other writings.(Ephesians 6:18) But what does that look life? To me, it simply means to be in constant contact with our Father. Just as Jesus would go to the Father throughout His day, we toomust keep the lines of communication open . . . talking and listening!We tend to talk a lot to God, but do not often listen for His voice or even adhere to it. Prayer is a two-way conversation! Yet we must also be watchful, aware of our surroundings to know how to pray and what to pray for in our lives. The model prayer (Matthew 6:9-15)helps us out as we pray for God's will and is provisions. Knowing what is going on in the world and seeking God's guidance in our personal lives allows us to function as effective believers in a challenging world. Through it all, we need to be thankful. In the most dire of circumstances, knowing the Lord and knowing He is with us brings peace. That peace, beyond human understanding, not only gets us through challenging moments in life, but also allows the Lord to use us to let others see Him at work. God comforts us to bring comfort to others! (1 Corinthians 1:1-11) So as we go through life we are to be very aware of what is going on around us. As we seek His face and His guidance, we can have the confidence that He is right with us as we seek to honor Him!
We have plenty of reasons to pray and so much to thank Him for, even the challenging times in which we live!

a HAPPY and HOLY HOLYday Season!

And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.(Matthew 10:41-42)
Whatever we can sacrifice to help someone in need is appreciated. Some may think "I do not have enough for myself or my family." Others may believe that "I cannot give enough to really help". Still others believe it is someone else's responsibility to assit the needy; the government, the churches, the rich. Jesus is clear here: Anyone who gives anything will not go unrewarded. For the believer this is expecially true! Even something as simple as a cup of water . . . The HOLYdays are upon us. The bells are ringing outside of grocery stores. We all know the needs are there. Yes, even needs worse than our own. Please give to someone today and plan to give a sacrificial gift to local folks in need between now and CHRISTmas. We do not have to loo too far to meet a real need today. If you choose, you may join us as we will be serving the needs of the local teens and families we serve in Prince George's County, MD this Holyday Season also. The Past is the Past . . .

Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.(Colossians 3:1-11)
The past is the past. It's a different world once one becomes saved by the blood of Jesus Christ. The past has been wiped clean. We are indeed made new as Paul wrote.(2 Corinthians 5:17) While we may suffer from the consequences of sins here on earth, our future looks bright. Despite the gloom and doom of this world, heaven awaits the believer, the disciple of Christ. There is indeed a peace the believer posssesses that ordinary folks simply cannot comprehend. (Philippians 4:7) So why are we still tied up in the past, or even the present-day mess? Human nature binds us daily! We simply allow our finite minds not to see God's plans working out. Paul reminds us in the passages above of what we used to be and used to do. We must pray and allow the Holy Spirit to let us get a peak of the vision of who we really are in Christ. Through His help, we can put away our past and live to honor the Savior who redeemed us from sin's guilt and chains. There are no super-Christians: We are each special in God's eyes . . . His children. Day by day, moment by moment, we must choose to love like it! If you are lke me you will find it hard to convince yourself of this . . . only the Spirit within us can do it.
We all must agree: the past is the past . . . let's move on!

Harmless? . . . REALLY?

See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ.(Colossians 2:8) Young teens viewing "R"-rated movies . . .ten-year old kids playing T-for-Teen video games . . . kids wearing fashions designed for adults to wear . . .
HARMLESS? REALLY?
What happens over time when kids constantly view inappropriate scenes in movies, constantly cause death in video games, or wear clothig items designed to attract and seduce others? The children grow up far too quickly, see things their little innocent minds cannot undrstand, and they find themselves lost in a culture in which they do not belong! For CHRISTian families, we must set the standard! We must stand when our kids say "All my friends have the game."We must say "NO!" even if sweet little Johnny says "Thomas' mom allows him to watch the movie." We must find another store when the clerk replies to us, "They are really harmless: All the kids are wearing them."
Have we been taken captive? Are we relying upon the hilosophy of this world to guide our children? have the spirits of darkness in this world clouded our thinking?
We folowers of CHRIST must set the standard, not follow the world's lower standards. As morals change, the BIBLE must be our guide!

Hero and Savior

He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ. To this end I strenuously contend with all the energy Christ so powerfully works in me. (Colossians 1:28-29)
So who are our heroes? Who is it that gets our attention? Who do perk up to when we hear their name or see there face on the screen? Who did we aspire to be when we were young? Who do we tell our kids to admire? Jesus was Paul's hero! Jesus was why Paul lived and breathed. He wanted to please Jesus and Jesus alone. Everything and everyone else came in a distant second. No task was too great. He was never too tired. He never saw a situation as too grave or impossible. He could do all things because of his Hero . . . his Savior . . .Jesus Christ!
So when we are too tired or too down or have too many excuses to go forward, let's remember why we live . . . it is Jesus! He is Hero and Savior!

THE PRICE FOR FREEDOM

“My brothers and sisters, you were chosen to be free. But don't use your freedom as an excuse to live in sin. Instead, serve one another in love.” (Galatians 5:13 NIrV)
What a price Christ paid for our freedom from sin! All the suffering, pain, mistreatment, embarrassment and humiliation; not to mention leaving the comforts of heaven to live in a sin-sick world and the give Himself over to such treatment…for His enemies…we sinners! Yes, he did it all for me, for you, and for anyone who will humble oneself and call on Jesus to save them from sin. In our recent history, many people have also sacrificed much for the freedoms we celebrate and often take for granted. In 1955, a gentle lady by the name of Ms. Rosa Parks was tired and needed to sit down on a bus in Mobile, Alabama. She would not give up that seat. The rest is history as Dr. Martin Luther King took up the charge for the freedoms of all citizens and eventually paid the ultimate price for those freedoms: his life. Many lost their lives during the struggles of the 1960’s in the cities throughout the U.S., including Senator Bobby Kennedy. Many in the Armed Services gave their lives and have been wounded while serving in battle all over the world, so we in this Nation could remain free. Some volunteered; some had no other choice as they were drafted to serve. Nevertheless, they sacrificed time, youth, and bodily harm for each of us. These folks did not use their freedoms to sin or the lack of freedoms to inflict harm either. In war, they chose to defend this Nation. At home, others chose a gentle yet persuasive manner to bring to light the transgressions of our society and were willing to pay whatever price necessary to bring about change. However, they did not back down to political pressure, verbal threats, or physical harm. We are challenged by God’s Word today to stand firm and be unmovable. (1 Corinthians 15:58) We are told that He will go with us through the valleys of life and just as He did with Daniel and his friends. He will bring us through fiery trials and the fiercest enemies.
We have no liberty to sin, run, or hide. We have the freedom and boldness to STAND!
So STAND my brothers and sisters in the liberty of God’s grace and mercy. Stand boldly clothed in the full armor of God. Stand by faith. Stand on His promises. Stand together! Will we pay THE PRICE FOR FREEDOM today?
Yes, we will!

It is still the same God

. . .for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength. (Philippians 4:11-13)
Trying times make folks think: I remember the well-paying job . . .fabulous vacations . . . the shopping trips . . . the new car feeling . . . the nights out . . . and on and on. Now we may be faced with lower wages, budget cuts, cancelling cable TV, selling a car, or cutting out the times at the malls and restaurants. Yet we can still be at peace! It is still the same God whether we have much or little. God is still on the throne despite our financial situation, our ailing health, or our relational struggles. We can still trust Him and have peace beyond human understanding. It is not easy . . . but who said it would be? Suffering brings us closer to the Savior.(2 Corinthians 1:8-9)It matures us and perfects our faith.(James 1:2) Do I like to be in need? No! Do I enjoy not be able to provide all my family may need or want? No!
But this is when God steps in . . .

God Remains the Source

Yes, and I will continue to rejoice, for I know that through your prayers and God’s provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance. I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. (Philippians 1 :18-21)
We did not choose to leave my former job and work in ministry for the Lord. In fact, it took us a few years to agree with God that He was correct. God chose my wife and me to seeve Him. As ridiculous as that seems, it is true. We heard a clear and precise call from God to leave our jobs and serve Him as missionaries to local families and children here in the DC metro area. So for the past fifteen years, since we became one as husband and wife, we have experienced one miracle after another and countless numbers come to know the Lord. Yet it has not been easy! It has been through prayer, faith, and God's provisions that we can still stand today and continue to serve.
One thing I know for sure, with all the resources available to us all, God remains the Source of all we ever need! My pastor reminded me of this very thing last evening.
Through financial struggles, chugging through on-line studies, family issues, health concerns, and more, God has remained the one constant. He has been there when all else has failed us. He has kept us. Things will indeed get worse in this world. We can see it coming. The question remains: With whom do we stand?
This is not a test, it is an actual emergency and we have been informed where to turn!

Despite the laws . . .

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” which is the first commandment with a promise . . .“so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.” Fathers,do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.(Ephesians 6:1-4)
Despite the laws of my state and country, as a father I will still teach and defend my faith within my family. (Joshua 24;15) I must face my wife and children each day. I must stand before my God one day as well. Even if unpopular or politically incorrect, I will stand for the Bible and the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Just as many did in the past, we will given plenty of opportunities to stand for our God in the near future. Fathers in particular, will we stand for Christ and His principles?
What will we do?
What will our response be?
Will we crumble, hide, or disappear in the shadows? Despite the laws, will we be unashamed of the Gospel and our Savior? This is not a political issue, an issue of culture, or an issue of race. It is an issue with our relationship with Jesus Christ! Fathers . . . men . . . young teenage males . . . will we refuse to be conformed and molded into the world's view and continue to allow the Spirit free will in our lives to continually transform us into His image? (Romans 12:1-2)
Will we lead by the Gospel or be lead by the world?
Despite the law, will we be salt and light in this world or be trampled upon and be rendered worthless for God?

Live the Truth in Love

And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. (Ephesians 4:30-32)
Believers must live the truth in love . . . this is a challenge. While it is easy to point out someone else's sin, we often do not acknowledge our own. Arrogance has no place in the CHRISTian life. Yes, sin grieves the Holy Spirit . . . our sin and the sin that is rampant in this world! God calls us to call sin just what it is . . . SIN. Yet we are to do it in love, offering forgiveness and the hope that is in Jesus. Never is this more clear than when Jesus deals with the woman caught in adultery.(John 8:2-11) Sinners are offered the chance to repent. The grace of God is still available to all who would receive it. Let's remember that when confronting sin these days. In loving confrontation, offer grace . . . offer Christ's love. Confronting sin in love is an opportunity to bring someone to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, not an opportunity to degrade someone.
As we make crucial decisions in life and face troubling situations, lets live the truth in love for all to witness!

An Election of faith and Allegiance

For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father. Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God . . .(Ephesians 2:18-19)
We have been chosen by God, so why do we choose to condone, even associate with so many ungodly people and orginizations? Why are we afraid to stand up and say "NO!" to the choices we have? Why do we join with blantant sin and ignore the actions of some just so we can remain popular with our freinds, families and co-workers? Why do we allow those in this vile culture to convince us to join forces with them? Well, we have choices to make this coming week. We have the opportunity to choose a President, choose local representatives, and even cast our vote for various questions concerning our lifestyle and community. So the question is whom will we side with, not what will we choose? So choose you this day . . .(Joshua 24:15). Whom will you serve(choose)? The gods of the people or the God of our life? Will we allow culture and associations to sway us and pull us from the Biblical standards God has set before us? God forbid! Will we do our part to keep this Nation under God? (Psalm 33:11-12)Will we bless God in this election or bless the world by giving in to their pressures to acccept their agenda? This is more than an election for government officials . . . it is an election of our faith and allegiance to God!

Democrat, Republican, or CHRISTian?

For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and understanding, he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, to be put into effect when the times reach their fulfillment—to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ.(Ephesians 1:4-10)
God first chose us . . . that alone is simply unbelieveable . . . that He would choose me and you to be His children. I do not know about you, but if I were God and had to choose a child . . . it would not be me! I am too much trouble!!! But not only did God choose us, He also invies us to call others to call out to Him! I may not be able to figure out that one either, but I am so glad He gives me this opportunity. In this ongoing election, I wonder now how will represent our Father as we choose? Give us a King!, the Jews demanded. (1 Samuel 8) They wanted to be like the world. We too have a choice to make: do we want to look more like the world or like believers in the God who first chose us to be His children? Will we follow the crowd or our Father?
Will we choose leaders who endorse the very principles God abhors?
As we vote, let us act with our heavenly citizenship and the principles God sets forth for His children, not as Democrats or Republicans, but as C H R I S T ians!

Political Correctness and Personal Choices

The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness,faithfulness,gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. (Galatians 5:19-24)
There is a difference between the followers of Jesus Christ and the world. Never is it more eveident than in these present times of political correctness and personal choices. Many believers are faced with with decisions each day at work, at home and even within our churces as to what decisions to make as to how we will live our lives? We strive to please the people around us and find ourselves bound by other's personal decisions. Do we find ourselves giving in to man's ideals and doctrines or the teachings of the Bible? Are we following behind the popular crowd or venturing out on our own ansd standing for the freedoms we have in Christ? A true believer is not bound by man and is free to honor the Word of God even if it costs friendships, popularity at work or family ties. Do we choose party lines or Christian values? Do we follow after cutural traditions or Biblical values? Are we locked in by the law or freed by the Spirit of Christ? It is time to get out of the box and live by Christ's standards.
Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,faithfulness,gentleness and self-control . . . freedom to choose . . . May we all choose wisely these days!

Daddy's Child

God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir. (Galatians 4:4-7)
An adopted child has all the benefits of a legally born biological child. Of course, in our world this means insurance benefits, financial benefits, and the like. But with God, being sdopted into His family means so much more! We become an heir to the Kingdom . . . a child of the Heavenly Father . . . a prince to the King of kings! Once God has welcomed us into the family, we immediately become son or daughter, not the outsider. From slavery to freedom . . . from unwanted to part of royalty . . .from orphan a part of God's heavenly family.
What can we do with this new-found status as Daddy's Child but share with others the same opportunity?

It's not my life . . .

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. (Galatians 2:20)
I've been crucified with Christ, He lives in me it's not my life . . . that's how we roll...
This is the rap some young friends from New Orleans wrote a few years ago in regards to their ministry in the aftermath of Katrina. (http://www.urbanimpact.org) Funny, on this day (October 29, 2012)when the East Coast is battling Hurricane Sandy, this verse becomes a way of life as well here! We live to honor Christ and serve others. Pastor John encourages all who serve Urban Impact in New Orleans to "love God with all you got and love peole 'til you drop!". I am so grateful to those who have taught me how to really serve (Pastor John, Pastor Mike, John, Kevin, Dingo, Tre,Terry, Jeremy, Katie, and so many more . . .) I try to live out these two great commandments each day I have remaining here on earth. It is a challenge for sure, but a real encouragement that it is not about me, but Christ and others . . . not just in times of disaster, but every day!
So how can we bless others thisday and cause them to praise our God? (John 15:8)

The change is evident !

For you have heard of my previous way of life in Judaism, how intensely I persecuted the church of God and tried to destroy it. I was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people and was extremely zealous for the traditions of my fathers. But when God, who set me apart from my mother’s womb and called me by his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son in me so that I might preach him among the Gentiles, my immediate response was not to consult any human being. I did not go up to Jerusalem to see those who were apostles before I was, but I went into Arabia. Later I returned to Damascus. Then after three years, I went up to Jerusalem to get acquainted with Cephas and stayed with him fifteen days. I saw none of the other apostles . . . only James, the Lord’s brother. I assure you before God that what I am writing you is no lie. (Galatians 1:13-20)
A change that is radically visible . . . this is what happens when the Holy Spirit enters one's life. The change is evident in one's walk, his talk, and decisions he makes in life. Others should be able to see a new way of thinking, a different motivation, maybe just a subtle change in lifestyle . . . but a change nonethelesss.
One cannot claim to have accepted Christ and not change somehow.
Paul went from killing Christians to being the greatest advocate for the Savior . . . even puting his own life in danger! What change has occurred in your life? I am sure you can list them. I know I can. Though I have a L O N G way to go, I can count the changes God has made in my life! From my thought process, my priorities in life, how I think of others, even to my career; God has changed me from the inside out! Wow . . . . Think of your life . . . If you are like me, you will thank God for the changes. I can see where I was headed 20 years ago! Yes, He indeed SAVED me! Yet I have so far to go to say I am pleasing God every day. It seems as as the hours go by, I can number the ways I have disappointed Him. Yet I can face another day because of His grace! (1 JOhn 1:9) No matter what tomorrow brings, I can rest assured that I am safe. Think back today and thank God for saving you . . . and if you have not responded yet, today is the day to ask Him to save you from your sin! (Hebrews 3:15) There is a storm coming . . . are you ready?

Saved . . . Really?

Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you . . .unless, of course, you fail the test? (1 Corinthians 13:5)
It is good to ask the question at times:
"Am I saved . . . really saved?"
Saved from what . . . and by whom? Do I really need to be rescued? Many folks do not even realize there is a need to be saved. They have never been told that there is a sin nature in each of us (Romans 3:23) and that we all are good deep inside. That is not what the Bible teaches! None of us are good !(Romans 3:10). We can only be forgiven of of this sin nature by Jesus' blood. (Romans 6:23, Romans 10:9-10)It is only through Him that sin is forgiven by God the Father.(1 John 1:9) Only God knows His children and the only evidence of that is the way in which we live. So have we indeed been born again? (John 3:3) Is our relationship with God personal? (John1:12) Are we showing fruit in our lives? (Galatians 5:22-23) Do we want to obey God? (John 14:15) Just a few vital questions to ponder . . . Listen to Jesus' prayer for all who believe:
My prayer for all of them is that they will be one, just as you and I are one,Father . . .that just as you are in me and I am in you, so they will be in us, and the world will believe you sent me. (John 17:21)
Am I saved . . . really?

Graded on a Curve...

Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. (2 Corinthians 12:7-10)
If Paul did not get and "A", then surely I would receive an "F"! Paul was the man. He had it going on! Yet he could boast upon nothing in comparison to what the Lord had done for him! Even though we have talents and accomplish some great things in life, it is simply because the Lord has allowed it and equipped us. Relying upon the grace of God to get by each day keeps us all grounded.
When it is all said and done and we all face the Lord, I am so relieved that we all will be graded on a curve!
The grade we receive in life will either be based upon our own efforts or upon the efforts of Jesus Christ upon the cross. I choose to allow His grace to get me through! So bring on the frustrations, the challenges, yes even the failures . . . I can still be victorious through Christ. Because of Him, my report card will read "Well done!"

Bouncin' Around . . .

For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.(2 Corinthians 10:3-5)
Thoughts and visions just bouncin' around in our heads every day as we witness so many strange activities day after day in ths world. Extreme videos and movies showing all kinds of violence and what was once unacceptable behaviors . . . even on the daily news. Reality shows that are far from our reality. Not to mention the absolute ridiculous fashion we eyeball each and every day worn by both males and females . . .
What is a CHRISTian to do . . . hide?
NO!
We are called to a different mind set and a different world view. I have learned the bounce technique from a popular men's study written in particular for those men (well all men really)that find themselves tempted by the various forms of sexual innuendo and provocation we witness in our daily walk. As we battle sexual tempation, we learn to take the unGodly visons and thoughts captive and put them in the mind's waste basket for trashing. We have to bounce our eyes from tempting sights and bounce our thoughts from ideas and plans that lead us from the Lord and His plans for us. In fact, this technique can work for women and children as well as we all face a world of crazy and simply ridiculous scenarios day after day at work, in the malls, on the streets, and in the privacy of our own homes on tv, internet and the like. It takes a working knowledge of what God desires for us and a personal accountablity to His Holy Spirit. It also takes transparency and honesty to admit our shortcomings and challenges both to ourselves and to others we can trust. We cannot fall for the traps satan sets withing culture, ethnic groups, or even families. So let's turn our eyes (and ears I might add)away from the vile and disgusting and make a pact with the Lord and one another (Job 31:1)to be different . . . to be holy( 1 Peter 1:16).
Let's keep bouncin' around the world with a mind on Christ and not the world!

I have to laugh at times . . .

Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.(2 Corinthians 9:6-7)
Reading thisthis morning, I have to admit, I have to laugh at times in my walk with God! I sit back and realize that it just does not make sense . . . to the world that is. Giving up good jobs with benefits to follow a calling that does not guarantee any immediate benefits, pleasures, or rewards. Turn my back to consistent pay, opportunities for all the overtime I could handle, paid vacations, and a sweet retirement package for a future hope? Give away all this for a life of sacrifice, service, and simple living . . . and be cheerful about it?
Oh yes, I have to laugh at times for sure!
It just does not add up for the common man, but for one who understands the plans of God for His children, it makes perfect sense! Once God gives eternal life, it is easy to live a life of giving back . . . so much so that it makes one laugh!

YOU make me smile today!

For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.(2 Corinthians 8:9)
What an awesome serse for us today. Paul is encouraging others to be like our savior . . . sacrificial givers! I thank God for so many of you who give so others may have the necessities of life. I especially thank the Lord for the few who give to The Sparrows' Nest Ministries so my wife and I can meet the needs of the teens and families we serve weekly. It is in doing this that we exemplify the love of Christ for the entire world to see! No matter how little we have in our lives, there are always some others who need the things we take for granted! Perhaps it is an after-school snack, a cool drink, a hair style for an upcoming school function, maybe just a few encouraging words from an adult who cares . . . even an innocent hug that says "You matter to me!" Well, these are the things the youth we work with need anyway! We all love to share with others. We all love to see the smile upon the faces of thosew we can assist in some way.
Well, YOU make me smile today!

The joy of it!

For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the Lord’s people. And they exceeded our expectations: They gave themselves first of all to the Lord, and then by the will of God also to us. So we urged Titus, just as he had earlier made a beginning, to bring also to completion this act of grace on your part. But since you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you . . . see that you also excel in this grace of giving. (2 Corinthians 8:3-7)
As missionaries, my wife and I have been able to experience the joy of being in rich supply and deep need . . . yes the joy of it! Being able to experience the blessings of God is so exciting and encouraging. When we have been able to have the things we want in life, the simple dsires of our heart, we cherish those times. It may be a vacation, a delicious dinner, a movie, or a get together with family or friends. Yet when we are in want and cannot possible meet our needs, it is these times when God steps in and works through His people . . . perhaps strangers to us . . . yet God knows our needs and still works through people to provide. This has been awesome! It is in these times when we are reminded that God will indeed supply all our needs (Philippians 4:19) as we seek Him and ask Him to do so. (Matthew 7:7) These times of want increase our faith and intensify our desire to serve the Lord even more. These times remind us that God is directly orchestrating our lives.
Oh, the joy of it . . . serving our great God!

Will the real CHRISTians please stand up?

Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? 16 What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said:“I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God,and they will be my people.” Therefore,“Come out from them and be separate,says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing,and I will receive you.” And,“I will be a Father to you,and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.” (2 Corinthians 6:14-18)
We need to participate in the voting process as Christians. We need to be active and aware in what is going on in government. We need real CHRISTians to be a part of our government. How else will we be able to partner with fellow believers? It seems that most times, we have to choose between the lesser of the two evils. I don't know about you, but I want to vote for folks who I know will depend upon the Word of God when they are pressuerd to act. Unfortunately this is not the case with many of the choices e have today.

Not about the suffering . . .

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. (2 Corinthians 4:16-18)
We all are trying to extend our lives in some way. We work out. We diet. We are constantly trying new foods, new vitamins, and the like. Yet our bodies are still decaying day by day. While it is good to be healthy, we cannot avoid death! As we live for Christ, we will suffer hardships. Some of us may go through more than others. Yet the more we focus on Christ and less on us, we become better servants and more effective for Him. (James 1:2) So stay on that exercise program and get in the best physical shape possible. It will enable us to better serve and be more equipped to handle the struggles, physical and spiritual. However, remember that the heart must be focused on the will of God. No matter what we go through, if we remain focused on doing His will, we will please Him and that is really all that matters. We look forward to being with the Lord, yet we live now to please Him. What an opportunity we have have in the years ahead. Since we do not know how long we have on this earth, let's make the most of the days remaining!
It is not about our suffering, but our serving!

God has this!

But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body. So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.(2 Corinthians 4:7-12)
I still am in awe of the fact that Jesus wants to use me! This broken human vessel . . . not just broken physically with arthritis, bursitis, and and other midle age afflictions, but a spiritual wreck as well. Most people would choose the best person available for a job, but God chose me? I sometimes wonder aloud what God saw in me? How could He possible think that I could be used (along with my bride) to help youth and families when we have a long way to go with our own family! It amazes me daily yet God did choose us and He continues to use us! So I know it must be Him and nothing about me. We face constant challenges. We face daily trials emotionally, physically, financially, and relationally. Yet God renews us daily as we remain dependent upon Him. We know we cannot possibly serve Him on our own merits . . . we have none! It is all His grace. It is Him living through us. I am nothing but a filthy rag in His sight and in most people's sight as well. What a privilege to serve our God! Not my life, but God living through me (Galatians 2:20). . . . am I am loving every minute of it knowing God has me in His hand! It may not always feel good or look great . . . but God has this!

real freedom

Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom(2 Corinthians 3:17)
Every wants to be free. Everyone wants their personal rights. Well, there is no freedom until one commits to Jesus Christ and becomes His disciple. Real freedom cannot be experienced until we release the shackles of sin and become a slave to Christ. This is only done by the sacrificial death of Jesus. He is the only way to real freedom! In a political age where promises are made and broken daily, Jesus' promises live out. (John 8:36) We are free to serve Christ.(Galatioans 5:13) It is He that now lives within us and through us. (Galatians 2:20) I am free from the burden of sin and free to live as a child of God, no longer trying to please everyone else!

Living Epistles

You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everyone. You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.(2 Corinthians 2:2-3)
We have heard it said that we Christians are living episitles, or letters, especially a formal or didactic ones; or in this case living communications of God's word to the world. What an awesome responsibility! So I often wonder what I am communicating to the world? I realize my living is not as powerful as Paul's. He was called to do what God had him to do. However, each of us has a story to tell; How God changed our lives and how we now live because of Him! Each moment we live writes another sentence, another paragraph, another chapter . . . God is writing HIS-tory through us for others to witness first-hand. Just as others saw Paul change before their very eyes our freinds, family, and associates should witness a transformation in our lives. We should not be who we were and not yet who we will be. What are others readng as a result of their relationship with us? Is it the truth about the God we claim to know or simply another action novel full of deception and lies? Are we living out the Gospel for all to see? I thank God for all those who have lived the Christian life in such a real way right before my eyes so I could experience Jesus for myself and ask Him into my life. It is my prayer that my life will do the same for smeone else!

Security . . .anticipating the future

Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. (1 Corinthians 1:21-22)
Once saved, you can be sure the Holy Spirit will keep His end of the bargain. The question is;
"Are we keeping our end of the deal?"
Many claim to know Christ . . . but our actions reveal the real truth. God does not abandon His kids. He is a committed Father. Are we legitimate sons and daughters? It is time we check out whose side we are on and stand with that decision. We must know for sure and then remain dedicated to live for Him, becasue He has called us and equipped us to serve. Then we can withstand whatever comes our way . . . even anticipating the future . . .

no cure for life

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ. If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort. ( 2 Corinthians 1:3-7)
We all wonder why we have so many bad things happen to us. Of course, it would be nice if we could just go through life with no major illnesses, no financial struggles, and no family issues. However, that is not so! We do live in world ruled by lusts and greed and there are obviously illnesses and disease that go along with this life as well. No one is immune and there is no cure for life!
But there is a Comforter . . .(John 14:16-26)
We have all the help we need in order to cope in Jesus. He has given us a second chance at life by His blood. He has cleansed us from the penalty of sin. He has even promised us abundant life. Jesus promised to send every believer the Holy Spirit to reside within each one of us as our personal assistant going through life. So why has He done all this?
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)
Yes, there WILL be troubles. We will suffer in life. However, that suffering also allows and equips us to help others through. Just as Christ was with us, we can be with others in their time of need. We can actually learn from our struggles and even trust God all the more! We relate to others' hurts and to the sufferings of Jesus Himself! Yes bad things will happen. However, we have been warned . . . there is no cure for life's struggles but there is a good reason for them. It is to draw closer to one another and to our Father . . . and we all look forward to that One Day when we suffer no more. . . .

Giving is not an option . . .

Now about the collection for the Lord’s people: Do what I told the Galatian churches to do. On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with your income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made. (1 Corinthians 16:1-2)
I have heard the comments a lot . . . Why does a pastor not have to work like everyone else? Why is the minister paid by the church? Why are we asked to support missionaries when it's the church's job to support them? Listen again to the Word of God:
For Scripture says, “Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain,” and “The worker deserves his wages . . ." (1 Timothy 5:18)
Paul quotes from the Old Testament (Deuteronomy 25:4)to emphasize that the Christian worker deserves pay for his duties. Everyone else gets paid well for their jobs. What is so different about Christian workers? If God set aside provisions for the Levites way back in the Old Testament (including land and food) why is it so hard for the people of God today to support the work of the Church? It is a challenge to say the least to be called and dedicated to full time ministry yet still have to work outside of that calling and be able to do both jobs well. Something gets cheated! Will it be the ministry . . . the secular job . . . the families . . .? Ultimately it is God's people who get cheated and God Himself who is disrespected! What has to happen to convince God's people to support His work and His workers? We are the Church! We must give so the Church can be effective. God holds us accountable.

not always romance, but always love

Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. (1 Corinthians 13:8-12)
I believe most of us are familiar with the love verses in this section of Scripture. We hear them quoted at weddings and even testimonies at funerals. We have even seen them in popular little doll statues with all the love is . . .sayings. Love never fails, but it does change. Love matures as we do. The meaning differs from one relationship to another. But love, true love, is from God and is genuine and not based upon feelings, but commitment! I often tell tees that dating comes after marriage as we grow in love with one another. The more we get to know our spouse, the deeper our love grows. The unfortunate thing is that for most couples, dating stops after marriage! As we model God's love through our marriages, let us remember that a hurting world is watching. Young people living in doubt need to see God's love reflected in our marriage relationship. This is a real, maturing, and genuine love that is visible for all to see . . . the love of God in us.

Submission . . . Bad or Good Idea?

But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. (1 Corinthians 11:3)
Submision is a dirty word today . . . even within the church. However, the Christian life is all about submission. No one is the boss . . . but God! As Paul stated above, the men must submit to the Lord's guidance. Women submit to the leadership of Godly men. Children submit to the Godly leadership of their parents. Did Christ not submit willingly to the Father, asking permission each time before He would act on earth? Did He not willingly submit to the cross, even though He would prefer another option? (Luke 22:42) Submission is a wonderful thing when everyone buys in to it. I do not believe anyone would object to following the lead of a Godly example, whether it be a church member following his Christ-submitted pastor or a wife standing beside her God-honoring husband. A simple game of follow the leader is really simple when we all follow Christ! Mutual Submission . . . not a bad thing at all!
Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.(Ephesians 5:21)

Don't blame God

So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.(1 Corinthians 10:12-13)
Don't blame God when sin overtakes us
. . . He is always there to provide a way out for each of us, yet many times we choose our own solution . . . and fail! Many peoeple want to blame God for their situations. God is not to blame. For the Christian, we have the Holy Spirit ready and willing to assist us . . . keep us from sin. He is our Counselor, Comforter, and the Rock and Shield which protects us. He goes to battle for us. Yet when we do fall, we have the promise of God to forgive us . . . (1 John 1:9) Oh do not be foolish . . . Satan is still alive and working in this world! He is still lying, devouring, and destroying. We must continue to flee. (James 4:7) Draw close to God. (James 4:8) He never leaves us:(Hebrews 13:5)it is we who wander! So hold on . . God is right there with us. He goes with us through life (Psalm 23:4)and is ready and willing to assist. Call upon Him, not just the first time, but all through life.
I have tried Him for myself . . . God is faithful!

It's Good to be Married!

But since sexual immorality is occurring, each man should have sexual relations with his own wife, and each woman with her own husband. The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his own body but yields it to his wife. Do not deprive each other except perhaps by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. I say this as a concession, not as a command. I wish that all of you were as I am. But each of you has your own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that.(1 Corinthians 7:2-7)
It is good to be single and to be able to serve the Lord without reservation and whenever the opportunity allows. However, marriage is a good thing too and one is still able to serve the Lord well, but marriage has other duties as well. I thank God He has given my wife and i an opportunity to serve Him as a family and therefore we can kill two birds with one stone . . . or two ministries with one effort!
Oh it is is indeed good to be married!
One spouse does not own the other, as some may believe! No, God owns both husband and wife. We are however, to look out for the other and fulfill our roles as helpers . . . completers! For instance in our family and ministry, my wife is the administrator as she is gifted by the Holy Spirit. She has special discernment over things I may rush into without thinking it out. I on the other hand have been gifted with teaching and evangelistic tools and as the spiritual head, I am free to study, teach, and lead by the Word of God. Yet my wife is still capable of discerning His Word and I also can handle finances and admin duties of the family. We compliment one another and support when necessary. It is not 50/50, but 100/100 effort!!! Many times it is an effort too . . . Yet there are some things I must do as a man. I must protect my wife.(1 Peter 3:7) I must love her as Christ loved the Church. (Ephesians 5:25) I must provide for her physically and spiritually. It is not so much that she is weak, but vulnerable! God has designed man to do this.
What has happened? We have believed a lie! C'mon men . . . step it up. No wife will refuse to submit to a Godly man. My wife adores me when I am following after Christ and doing what He requires. When I do not, family life is in a shambles. I am accountable to God and to my wife and to my entire family. I am responsible!
Men must love their wives . . . then wives will respect the men! Love is a verb . . . . not just a word! (Ephesians 5:21-33)

Nothing but Fools?

We are fools for Christ, but you are so wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are honored, we are dishonored! To this very hour we go hungry and thirsty, we are in rags, we are brutally treated, we are homeless. We work hard with our own hands. When we are cursed, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it; when we are slandered, we answer kindly. We have become the scum of the earth, the garbage of the world—right up to this moment.(1 Corinthians 4:10-13)
Nothing but fools . . . well yes, in a sense! As missionaries, many times my wife and feel alone and forgotten, yet we persevere. Why? We cannot quit on a God who has never forgotten us! We have to constantly remind ourselves that this world is not about rewards, fame, or having it all. it is about serving God in the area in which one is called. Paul experienced this day after day. he must have been rather comfortable as a Pharisee chasing down the early Christians. He was well educated and respected among the Jewish leadership and feared among the Christians. he has clout! Yet when Jesus called him, he left it all to follow Christ. Now he was a wanted man . . . but wanted to be killed! Though my wife and I led a rather comfortable life af government workers before being called to the mission field, we feel believe in our hearts that this life is so much better. We may never know if we can make ends meet month to month and we may run out of energy before the week or even the day is through, yet God makes up for our weaknesses and shortcomings. many have said we were fools forgiving up our jobs when we could have waited and retired later. But how could we ignore God? Do ot ignore the call of God. many times, we only get one chance. make the most of it. Go ahead . . . be foolish . . . God makes His fools seem wise to the wise of this world! We trust Him to equip us and provide for us as He sees fit. What about you?
Things may not always look good in the present, but God promises a much better view from heaven one day!

One Team . . . One Goal . . . Follow the Leader

I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought. My brothers and sisters, some from Chloe’s household have informed me that there are quarrels among you. What I mean is this: One of you says, “I follow Paul”; another, “I follow Apollos”; another, “I follow Cephas”; still another, “I follow Christ.” (1 Corinthians 1: 10-12)
As the Body of Christ, we should be one team . . . with one goal . . . following one leader. All too often, this is not the case. We find divisions, within demominations as well as within local churches. No team can be very successful for long with infighting and quarrelling. As it is a problem today within our various churches, it was also in Paul's days. I believe it is human nature to want to be the one and not to be one! Listen to Paul's words to the Ephesian church . . .
Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.(Ephesians 4:3-6)
There is only one Good Shepherd! We all fall under His rule. While we may admire this pastor or that minister, it is not them whom we follow, but Christ. As they come under the Savior's guidance, we can easily follow their lead. It is Christ whom was crucified and raised from the dead and His Spirit which leads and guides us all. God is on the throne and His Spirit leads the churches. Let's not get caught up in worshipping the representatives of Christ, but rather the real thing.

Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day.  For our light aff...
