Trust?

Where do I place my trust?

You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. (Isaiah 26:3)

Who do I trust today? Here lately, a lot of things and a lot of people have been challenging my faith. People I should trust . . . Things that should not really bother me. But Whom should I really trust anyway? 

God, be my rock . . . my strength . . . my faith . . . my resting place . . . my Savior . . . my God this day!

Planning with God in mind

God's plans and our plans . . .

“For the Lord God is a sun and shield; The Lord will give grace and glory; No good thing will He withhold From those who walk uprightly.” (Psalm 84:11)

As we head into the summer months and finish off school, be reminded that God wants to bless us! Many times it is up to us! 

Just a short message today to remind us all to do all we can to please God in our planning, so He can do all He has planned for us!

What has your God done for you? Tell HIS-tory!

We have all probably heard the encounter of the man who had a legion of demons possessing him. Jesus healed him and the demons entered a herd of pigs (some 2,000!) and the pigs dove into the sea and drowned. It caused an uproar within the community as we read in Mark 5. The man wished to follow Jesus, but Jesus told him to stay behind.

As He was stepping into the boat, the [Gentile] man who had been demon-possessed was begging with Him [asking] that he might go with Him [as a disciple]. Jesus did not let him [come], but [instead] He said to him, “Go home to your family and tell them all the great things that the Lord has done for you, and how He has had mercy on you.” So he [obeyed and] went away and began to publicly proclaim in Decapolis [the region of the ten Hellenistic cities] all the great things that Jesus had done for him; and all the people were astonished. (Mark 5:18-20 AMP)

We are challenged by God not simply to be followers, but also storytellers! In all the Gospels and in the Acts of the Apostles, we are instructed to be His witnesses . . . to go and tell the stories of what God has done in our lives.  . . . HIStory. We are not to keep silent. 

What has your God done for you? Tell HIS-story!

God is in control . . . trust Him!

Whether we are going through a mental health battle, grieving the loss of a loved one, being exposed to an entirely new city, or facing deadlines at work, know that we can be grounded because God is in control.

We like to think we can control everything, but we really can’t. We make our own decisions and choices, yet God is the one who is ultimately in control, guiding our path toward His goodness and glory. Since God is loving, caring, and perfect, we can trust Him with the outcome of every situation, even if we don’t understand it at the time.

Turn to God and trust Him. He will keep us grounded during these trials. Even the simplest of verses that most of us have memorized still works today:

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. (Proverbs 3:5-6).

He will help you stay grounded through this difficult, uncontrollable season. Trust God, yes. Also trust what /who He has provided to assist us:

• Seek advice from friends/associates
• Go outside and enjoy nature
• Breathe deeply now and then
• Therapy....it's ok!

With God, we will get through any situation and come out refined as gold.

Why me Lord?

We are not alone in our feelings. Everyone struggles at times . . . even the best of believers! Look at the great prophet of God Elijah! 

And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, also how he had executed all the prophets with the sword. Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, “So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time.” And when he saw that, he arose and ran for his life, and went to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there. But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he prayed that he might die, and said, “It is enough! Now, Lord, take my life, for I am no better than my fathers!” (1 Kings 19:1-4)

Who hasn’t been there? When faced with impossible circumstances, we ask, “Lord, I did what You wanted and I thought it would work out well, but the opposite happened. Why me Lord?!”

Elijah was so discouraged he asked God to take his life. But as we read on, the Lord provided for him for the next forty days. Eventually the King, Jezebel and their regime would be killed. In fact, Jezebel would be thrown from her window, die and be eaten by dogs! Go ahead, mess with God's servants!

Like Elijah, we simply have to hang in and trust God. He has us!!!

As Ahab and the people of Israel continued to serve and worship Baal, Elijah continued to trust God. So we read through the account in 1 Kings 18 and we see that Elijah has challenged the people and their prophets; your god vs. my God! 

So Ahab sent for all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together on Mount Carmel. 21 And Elijah came to all the people, and said, “How long will you falter between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him.” But the people answered him not a word. (1 Kings 18:20-21)

Guess Who won!?!

Elijah even poked fun at their god and some 450 prophets, saying maybe he was busy, on a journey, perhaps even taking a nap!  Eventually he called upon the God of Israel and He consumed the entire offering! 

You see, it only takes one person to trust God to change even a Nation! What about us? In Whom do we put our trust?

To my graduates and others who have passed through my life . . . a watchful eye.

Today is the final day for our seniors and the last day for formal instruction as we prepare to review for final exams next week. This is a good time to look back and recall what God has taught us and what we have applied. God promises the psalmist that He not only teaches, but continues to watch over His children throughout life. 

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you. (Psalm 32:8)

As a coach, mentor, teacher and eventually friend of many of my students, What I build into them comes from what God and others have built into me. It is not book knowledge, but Godly wisdom and genuine love and care. In the classroom, yes it is instruction, discussions and exams. However, out of the classroom it is heartfelt care and concern for souls.

When an entire nation strays from God . . .

Now Ahab the son of Omri did evil in the sight of the Lord, more than all who were before him. And it came to pass, as though it had been a trivial thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, that he took as wife Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal, king of the Sidonians; and he went and served Baal and worshiped him. Then he set up an altar for Baal in the temple of Baal, which he had built in Samaria. And Ahab made a wooden image. Ahab did more to provoke the Lord God of Israel to anger than all the kings of Israel who were before him. (1 Kings 16:30-33)

When an entire nation strays from God . . .

During his 22-year reign “Ahab son of Omri did more evil in the eyes of the LORD than any of those before him” (v. 30). After marrying Jezebel, a Sidonian princess, Ahab formally sanctioned Baal worship in Israel. Jezebel was a Baal worshiper and Ahab supported her to the point of constructing a shrine for Baal and an Asherah pole (vv. 32–33).

It is hard to ignore the impact of this moment on Israel’s history. The nation was teetering on a knife's edge. None of its kings had been righteous—not a single one! Its history had been characterized by violence, chaos, and increasing theological drift. Now their king was partnering with his wife to draw Israel into worship of a rival deity.

This sounds so much like our world . . . our Nation today. A country once built upon Godly principles has shifted sideways.  Our political leaders are endorsing and making ungodly laws and the people of God are quiet. When we do speak we are silenced. Politicians claiming to be CHRISTian dare name the name of Jesus publicly. 

What is our role in such an ungodly Nation and world? Will we allow our Nation to receive the punishment of God or step up for such a time as this? (Esther 4:14)

In His footsteps. . . . to our youth

Walk where Jesus would have you to walk. Live the life He has designed for you. Follow His footprints, not the world's.

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. (Ephesians 2:10)

God has designed a plan for each of us. We choose the path we will walk however. After all, Jesus walked this earth. He designed in fact! Why not trust Him rather than the world? 

The world and its ruler wold have us to choose a different path. He wants us to chase riches, people, fame, applause, and quick fixes. God wants us to chase eternity with Him. We get to choose. His path is not always easy, but it is best. The struggles are worth it, as long as we are struggling with God and not against Him!

Young people . . . please choose Christ!

we learn from our mistakes

 Learning from our mistakes . . .  are we?

And it happened, when Zimri saw that the city was taken, that he went into the citadel of the king’s house and burned the king’s house down upon himself with fire, and died, because of the sins which he had committed in doing evil in the sight of the Lord, in walking in the way of Jeroboam, and in his sin which he had committed to make Israel sin. (1 Kings 16:18-19)

We would like to think that we learn from our mistakes. Unfortunately, we often repeat them again and again. In 1 Kings, we witness a generational chain of sin where no one seemed to learn from failures. We like to talk about how foolish the Jewish people were, yet we see to do the same. How long do we keep making the same mistakes before we realize how dumb we are?

What should we learn from this period of instability and chaos? First, we see the far-reaching consequence of Jeroboam’s sins. The decision to turn from the Lord led to complete chaos. But we must remember that while God was disciplining them, He had not abandoned them.

We have time to turn from our lifestyle of sin. God is patient, but how patient?

 Trusting God?

Whoever trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will flourish like a green leaf. (Proverbs 11:28)

These seem like simple words, but so many say they trust God yet worry to death about money. While money is needed, God is essential to life! 

I often ask young people, "How much money is enough?" I receive answers like; "six figures", "$100,000 a year", even "millions!" 

I have learned the value of hard work and many times long work, but one thing I have learned more than anything is to trust God and value family. Money is not my priority, but a tool for our life's ministry.
