Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. Give no offense, either to the Jews or to the Greeks or to the church of God, just as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved. (1 Corinthians 10:31-33)
CHRISTians and Mardi Gras..... Why? Why not?
Originally celebrated from the Feast of the Epiphany (Jan.6) through the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday (thus the label "Mardi Gras", translated Fat Tuesday) Mardi Gras has secular traditions dating back to Roman celebrations of the arrival of Spring.(Saturnalia and Lupercalia) As the French arrived in the southern U.S. territories, the tradition was carried here. It is celebrated in many cultures along with Carnival.
CHRISTians have adopted the season to ring in the beginning of Lent, a time of fasting and prayer from Ash Wednesday through Resurrection Day. Rather than a day if sin and decadence, it is a day to eat up all the forbidden foods and clear the home of temptation! Thus we have Fat Tuesday!
Yet we know our focus at this time of year is on the coming Savior and a time of refocusing upon Him and how we are living to Him or Him. Many will give up or fast from favorite foods, activities, or associations and then in turn give monies associated with such to the needy.
I have learned this one thing in over twenty years of mission life interacting with various cultures:
As with anything we do, do it with the intent to honor God and bring others to Him! But get rid of that junk food too!
