Bondservants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh, not with eye service, as men-pleasers, but in sincerity of heart, fearing God. And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ. But he who does wrong will be repaid for what he has done, and there is no partiality. (Colossians 3:22-25)
As to the Lord . . . . what an easy thing to say and pray, but so challenging to live out day to day. As Christ-followers, we are to obey law enforcement, the government, supervisors, teachers, and parents for sure . . . . yet only as it pleases God! When the law or rules come into conflict with the Word of God, we are to obey God.
I think we all agree with that premise, would you agree?
However, what about why we obey? Do we find ourselves working hard at the job, doing all of our assignments, or even obeying laws to honor God, or to receive the applause of people? If we are honoring God, then why do you and I get so upset when people do not see our efforts, approve of our work, or reward us with special recognition?
Ouch . . . that hurts! I am talking about us now . . . you and me! Let's take a hard look at our why!
Why do we do what we do every day . . . to please God or man?
