Imagine fasting for forty (40) days! No solid food. No burgers, pizza, pasta. . . not even a salad or piece of fruit! Now imagine someone coming along with a food cart of all your favorites . . . perhaps even cheesecake and ice cream . . . would we be able to resist? Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry. Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ” (Matthew 4:1-4)↬↬
Just after being baptized by John, Jesus was led by the Spirit of God to fast in the wilderness to prepare for His mission. After forty days Satan appeared and offered Him everything; food, possessions and power. Yet Jesus resisted. He used scripture!
The Word of God is is "sharper than any two- edged sword"(Hebrews 4:12). It divides soul and spirit, judging thoughts and intentions of the heart! As we are convicted of His Word the believer is moved to live out His Word! As Jesus used it against Satan, he fled. One thing Satan cannot do is live the Word of God!
We read, memorize and apply Scripture so we can live it out. We hide it in our hearts so as to not sin against God (Psalm 119:11). This is exactly what Jesus did. If memorizing Scripture was important for the Lord Jesus, it is important for us His followers . . . don't you think?
