Foundations

As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men . . . (Colossians 2:2-8)

Foundational facts . . . what we build upon determines our structure. Ask any architect, the foundation of a building is crucial to the structure. Tires on a car are crucial to its  performance. Even cheerleaders and gymnasts, when making a pyramid, need strong athletes on the bottom to hold up the rest of the team. The foundation is the key to the survival of the structure! The same is true for us as individuals and as a people.

As believers, we are rooted and grounded in Christ, but also in those who have gone before us. We have parents and grandparents who have taught us our faith from childhood up. Some of us were brought along by folks outside of our family; perhaps a friend, a teacher, or a pastor as I was. Yet regardless of how Christ found us, we all have a starting point . . . a foundation!

Stand upon that foundation as life goes on and build upon it. Encourage others and watch the spiritual building take place brick by brick. Do not let the lies of the enemy and those in this world sway you. Years later you will look back and see the strong structure of faith that God has built in and through you and those around you! Take your faith seriously!

“Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.”         (Matthew 7:24-27)
