Then He said to them, "But now, he who has a money bag, let him take it, and like wise a knapsack, and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one. For I say to you that which is written must still be accomplished in Me: 'And He was numbered with the transgressors.' For the things concerning Me have an end." So they said, "Lord, look, here are two swords." And He said to them, "It is enough." (Luke 22:36-38)
Jesus is now informing the disciples of a new era. As He would leave, they would not find everyone friendly. All those they would meet would not offer food, clothing, or lodging. They indeed would need supplies. They would also need physical protection. Jesus may not have needed the sword that Peter used in (John 18:10), yet they would need it for their protection from not only robbers, thieves and perhaps wild animals, but also from those who would hunt them down!
Some say Jesus referred to the sword as the Word. Well, if He did, the "two" mentioned in the referenced passage would mean they had two bibles, manuscripts, or scrolls with them . . . probably not!
Notice Jesus did not say get an arsenal of weapons! He simply instructed the disciples to be prepared for all things to come . . . even personal persecution and threats. There is nothing wrong with protecting yourself and your loved ones, in my humble opinion and understanding.
What do you say?
