The "Tools" of friendship

After that, Jonathan and David became close friends. Jonathan loved David just as he loved himself. From that time on, Saul kept David with him. He didn’t let him return to his father’s home. Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him just as he loved himself. Jonathan took off the robe he was wearing and gave it to David. He also gave him his military clothes. He even gave him his sword, his bow and his belt. (1 Samuel 18:1-4)
Our world is so driven by technology that many people today try to ease their loneliness through social media and on-line relationships. A computer friend can never satisfy or compare to the human fellowship that God designed for man. However, healthy friendships don't just happen. They require intentional effort. Sacrifice . . .Commitment . . .Time . . .Selflessness . . . all tools of friendship. Are these tools found in your toolbox ? Are these tools sharpened and ready for use or rusting away in your garage of past hurts and disappointments? Jonathan was willing to give David all that was for him as the King's son. He realized that David was the better man and more equipped and he also realized David was God's anointed. David in turn pledged his friendship to Jonathan and was humble and patient in his role as God's soon-to-be king. They had a life-long bond.
A man who has friends must himself be friendly,But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. (Proverbs 18:24)
