Why do we follow?

He spoke, signifying by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, “Follow Me.”

Then Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following, who also had leaned on His breast at the supper, and said, “Lord, who is the one who betrays You?” Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, “But Lord, what about this man?” Jesus said to him, “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me.” (John 21:19-22)

Like Peter and the others, many times we concern ourselves too much with what others are doing for Christ rather than what we should be doing. Many times we begin following them rather than following Christ.

There are many wonderful ministries and men and women of God doing great things for the Kingdom today. It is great to partner with them and work alongside them. However, we must remember why we are doing these things! We are not to glorify the work or the worker, but the Lord!

God has a great work for each of us, His children. If we are called to be the janitor of the church, then we do it unto the Lord. If we are called to serve the homeless, then we serve with humility and the love of Christ. Whether we are called to lead a small youth group or a congregation of thousands, we are still doing it for the applause of only One! In fact, if are simply called to lead a life devoted to Christ, that alone is being a leader.

All leaders must follow someone or some thing.  Who or what are we following . . . and why? Are we able to give up all false pretense, pride and popularity and simply follow Christ?

But He said, “The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.”  Then Peter said, “See, we have left all and followed You.”(Luke 18:27-28)
